Government College of Engineering and Textile Technology, Berhampore (GCETTB) is one of the oldest and most prestigious engineering institutions in West Bengal. Established in 1927, the college has a rich heritage of producing skilled engineers and technologists who have made significant contributions to industry and academia.
Affiliated to Maulana Abul Kalam Azad University of Technology (MAKAUT) and accredited by NAAC, the college offers undergraduate and postgraduate programs in multiple engineering disciplines, with a special emphasis on textile technology — a unique strength that sets it apart from peer institutions.
Located in Berhampore, the cultural capital of Murshidabad district, GCETTB has been a beacon of technical education in the region for nearly a century. The college sprawls over a vast campus equipped with state-of-the-art laboratories, libraries, hostels, and sports facilities.
Our History
From a silk weaving institute to a premier engineering college.
Government Silk Weaving and Dyeing Institute
Established in the central jail premises at Berhampore on 19th July 1927 under the Directorate of Industries, Government of West Bengal. Offered a two-year advanced course after matriculation and a one-year artisan course after Class VIII, with 30 students in each.
Shift to Present Campus
The institute was shifted to its present location at 4 Barrack Square (East) during 1932-33.
Bengal Technological Institute
Upgraded with a new name and introduction of a 3-year diploma course (licentiate) in Textile Technology along with a 2-year artisan course.
Berhampore Textile Institute
Renamed considering the general nature of the courses offered.
College of Textile Technology (Degree)
Rechristened and upgraded to a degree college to meet the demands of Indian textile industries. Modernisation of syllabus, workshops and laboratories. Introduction of 3-year B.Sc. (Tech.) in Textile Technology affiliated to University of Calcutta.
4-Year B.Sc. (Tech.) Course
A 4-year B.Sc. (Tech.) degree course was introduced.
Directorate of Technical Education
The college was brought under the administrative control of the newly formed Directorate of Technical Education.
Affiliation to University of Kalyani
Affiliation transferred to the University of Kalyani. B.Sc. (Tech.) changed to B.Tech. as per AICTE norms.
GCETTB & CSE Department
Brought under the academic control of West Bengal University of Technology. A new B.Tech. course in Computer Science and Engineering was introduced. The college was renamed as Government College of Engineering and Textile Technology.
Final Renaming
The college was once again renamed as Government College of Engineering and Textile Technology.
NBA Accreditation
Textile Technology department of the institute was accredited by the National Board of Accreditation (NBA).
